I have always admired Richard Branson. This man not only has vision, but he gives, supports and encourages: he gravitates, quite naturally, outside the square. Branson once said “I wanted to be an editor or a journalist … but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going.”
As we invest time and energy into writing, producing and presenting content on our blogs, it is worth shifting our focus - step back, so to speak, to embrace Bransons’ wisdom.
We are not just ‘bloggers’ writing content. If we are to create and maintain successful business, it is essential to think, act and nurture the entrepreneur within.
There is a formula for success. Part of that formula requires addressing our thoughts, beliefs and attitudes. Entrepreneurship requires clarity and expansion of vision and mind; and it requires moving outside of our square with a positive, can do attitude.
It’s wise advise to write/blog within our niche, this is our passion, and passion is the fabulous driving force behind great content. It’s even wiser though, to step outside of our niche, from time to time, and learn other skills that will ensure success in our publishing profession.
In an earlier post When enough is too much: optimized balance it was highlighted that site optimization, whether it be for search engine or reader, amounts to customer service and satisfaction. And I encourage bloggers, like an entrepreneur, to broaden their vision to see both search engine and reader as a customer and not just someone or something that hyperlinks and keywords are fed too.
A blogging entrepreneur works on the most productive and positive ways to deliver the very best online customer service and satisfaction. If you satisfy a search engine with meaningful content, it will deliver you to their customers. If you satisfy the reader with a quality blog, ie. it gives them value for the time they invest on your site, they will remain royal to your service.
Over on chrisg.com, blogger Chris Garrett has a great post - How to Get More Value from Your Site. Discussing the importance of loyal customers and fans, Chris highlights two things that blogs should provide:
• customers must experience your product in the most positive way
• the customer needs to reap the benefits
Problogger Allen Taylor writes within his niche, you read the passion in his words, and you know he knows what he’s blogging about. His site Personal Investing Advice undoubtedly provides a service that customers will benefit from. The posts are short punchy, to the point and full of good advise. It means the reader doesn’t have to wade through pages to discover how to better position themselves financially.
In optimizing reader experience, Allen is optimizing his site for search engines.
Because of the nature of online work, in that we don’t have a client physically standing in front of us, nor a search engine, it’s easy to forget that we need to strive for good customer service and satisfaction.
If your interested in improving your blog business by honing your entrepreneurial skills, then bookmark Jason Rakowski’s blog Learn Good Customer Service. Like Allen Taylor’s, this blog is a wealth of positive, productive information. Check out this post: Importance of online customer service, Rakowski is a master at his craft and gives value for time invested on his site.
An entrepreneurial blogger will constantly ask these two questions of their site: ‘how can I better improve my readers experience?’ and ‘how can I help search engines deliver my service to their customers?’
